It reminded me of the feeling I have when drinking milky oolong tea, being immersed in its soft taste and a smell that cocoons you in. A place where you roam around tentatively, not knowing what awaits you around the corner, set in a soft, dreamy and “creamy” kind of atmosphere (stealing that last expression from one of my fellow book club participants since it simply fits perfectly as an explanation □ ). To start with the positive parts first, I would describe reading “The God of Small Things” with the sensation of stepping into a mystic maze. It’s quite difficult to put the reading experience of “The God of Small Things” in words because it was marked by so many ups & downs for me. ![]()

They often draw on numerous references to Spanish history, colonial past, art and culture, ancient treasures and the sea. Most of his novels take place in Spain or around the Mediterranean. Her writing is fascinating both for what she observes deliberately, and for the everyday touches that would have meant little to her, but give us an insight into the world at the time. Henning was a British woman who lived in the Australian outback, and then the city, during the mid-19th century: a time when Australia was still defining itself as separate from the motherland, and when of course the role of women was still incredibly confining. King Jellyjam seems incapable of speech, though he regularly roars when angered, and on occasion will belch loud enough to shake the campgrounds above, which the campers mistake for earthquakes. ![]() His flabby arms are strong enough to easily pick up a person, though his fat, stubby fingers are incapable of grabbing anything small or flat. He has two arms, but no legs, and seems incapable of moving under his own power. His face consists of two enormous, watery yellow eyes, a big drooling mouth with fat purple lips, and two nostrils that constantly leak streams of chunky white mucus. He is a gigantic purple blob the size of a house whose slimy purple skin constantly sweats live snails, as well as emitting a horrible, sour stench (Wendy describes the smell as being like "dead fish, rotting garbage, sour milk, and burning rubber-all at once"). The real King Jellyjam, however, is far more vile and horrific. On the logo of Camp Jellyjam, King Jellyjam appears as a simple purple gumdrop-shaped ball with a grinning cartoon face and a golden crown. ![]() |
